You Look Nice Today, Hemingway, and a Euphemism for "drunk."

From The Sun Also Rises by Mr. Hemingway:

“You don’t mean it,” Bill said. “I should think it would have been grand for the tailor.”

“Frightfully good tailor. Never believe it to see me now,” Mike said. “I used to pay him a hundred pounds a year just to keep him quiet. So he wouldn’t send me any bills. Frightful blow to him when I went backrupt. It was right after the medals. Gave his letters rather a bitter tone.”

“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.

“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”

“What brought it on?”

“Friends,” said Mike. “I had a lot of friends. False friends. Then I had creditors, too. Probably had more creditors than anybody in England.”

“Tell them about in the court,” Brett said.

“I don’t remember,” Mike said. “I was just a little tight.”

“Tight!” Brett exclaimed. “You were blind!”

Just thinking about random things thanks to my new favorite Podcast, You Look Nice Today.

It should be fine.

Hummm...

I've been annoyed with a lot of things lately. Not generally-overall-annoyed, but annoyed with specific things. And people.

But whatever...

I have been drawing funny little self-portraits the past couple days. I especially enjoy drawing myself as a super hero (i.e. wearing a cape and looking triumphant.) I even drew a couple pictures of Bailey that I approved of. He's a funny little dog, difficult to capture on paper. For the purposes of drawing myself a sidekick, I've considered trading him in for a beagle. Or a dinosaur. I draw good dinosaurs.

I drew a series of post-it note pictures for Stu a few months ago that illustrated my infamous Poofy White Cloud Theory. He thought they were pretty rad.

I should start taking pictures of these things.

I went to Target twice today with 2 different friends from work, went to a couple meetings, signed off on a project that is finally wrapping up, had a chicken nugget Happy Meal from McDonald's, and got some paint and polymer clay at Michael's. Now I'm home, just showered, feeling pretty buggered. I'll probably take Bailey to the dunny and then go to bed.

I miss New Zealand.

NAP

Naps Are Productive!

I have decided to start an organization to raise awareness about the benefits of napping:
Naps Are Productive;
or, NAP.
"We're going to take this lying down!"
A coalition dedicated to increasing productivity by promoting and supporting sleep in the middle of the day.

Napping is often associated with laziness, but it only takes the most basic common sense to see that this is faulty logic. A well-rested person obviously has more energy, making him far more capable of achieving a higher level of productivity than his sluggish, listless, worn-out counter-part.

Whereas our anti-napping, American society frowns upon the employee who falls asleep at her desk and relies on a diet of Red Bull and sugar to make it through the afternoon, other cultures have long embraced the simple concept of sleeping to prevent and treat exhaustion! The most well-known example of this is the Spanish and Hispanic Hispanic tradition of the siesta, but afternoon sleep is also common throughout the Philippines, China, Vietnam, India, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Malta, the Middle East, and North Africa. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siesta)

Furthermore, among its many benefits, being well-rested leads to greater creativity, a positive mood, better physical health, sharpened senses, improved ability to learn, a higher tolerance to stress, and increased motivation.

This clear correlation between napping and increased productivity should be recognized and celebrated! Napping needs to be an accepted and even encouraged practice!

I'm going to start writing more lists...

Feeling...conflicted?

Hello world,

I am feeling a bit funny inside. Hormones, most likely.

Also boredom.

I'm "on the bench" at work so I didn't do much all week and this gray Saturday just makes me feel lazy...Laziness leads to self-inflicted boredom.

My dishwasher is running - and so is Bailey.

John and I did some shopping today. I got wine from Trader Joe's - including one from NZ and one from Greece!

My dad wants me to meet him up at the Shortstop soon. I don't have a good excuse not to do that so I guess I will. Not that I don't want to...it's just my laziness complaining. He just called again and now I'M complaining because he was pestering me about my car and telling me it doesn't make noises when obviously it does.

Nic says I should dye my hair. I do have a lot of gray hairs...wisdom.

Ok, off to be a good daughter.

Love,

Amy Jane
